This study explores the excess mortality impact of COVID-19, exceeding 3.4 million according to the World Health Organization. Drawing on research dating back to the 1940s, this interactive session will delve into the correlation between mass trauma events or disasters and the subsequent escalation of substance use/misuse among youth. The focus will extend to understanding the enduring consequences of such experiences on the mental health of teenagers. Finally, the session will conclude with group activities aimed at reviewing and customizing evidence-based strategies that foster resilience in youth and their communities, aiming to alleviate the persistent effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
