Beyond Self Care: Igniting the SPARK in Yourself and Those You Serve
In this session, Brooke and Ashley will share how a deep realization that we all have unbreakable SPARK inside forced them to challenge their own narratives about being damaged, and transformed how they show up to their community, family, and the non-profit they run.

They will highlight how this SPARK, within every human being, is the birthplace of well-being, common sense, intelligence, solutions, creativity, and innovation and share lessons of hope they have learned from their life’s most impactful and unsuspecting teachers: sex trafficking survivors, juvenile inmates, and children in the foster care system.

They will examine what truly recognizing our own mental health can do for us in the face of burnout and compassion fatigue and explore how to uncover innate resilience and deeper connections by understanding how the mind works and recognizing their own SPARK.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how the mind works and impacts day-today life, recognition of innate resilience in themselves and the youth they serve, the ability to serve youth with a deeper sense of connection, and an understanding of how recognition of innate resilience directly links to stress resistance in the face of burn-out.

LUNCH & LEARN: TPN and Coalitions Working Together to Meet Needs of Community
The presentation will begin with a brief description of the work and scope of TN Prevention Network Agencies and Substance Use Prevention Coalitions. Details will include what their grant requirements include, target populations served and other relevant program information. From there Ridgeview’s TPN program will explain how we work together with Anderson County Anti-Drug Coalition and the Roane County Anti-Drug Coalition. Examples will include their staff presenting during our TPN student groups at schools and TPN staff participating on their vaping panel with students and families and other community events (i.e., Prom Promise).

Room will be set up with signs on tables for each of the regions and participants will be asked to sit at the table of the region they serve. During this part of the presentation groups will be asked to discuss with their table mates how TPN and Coalitions can best work together to meet the needs of their community. Ideas will then be listed on flip charts and shared with the group. Participants will be encouraged to share contact information and for TPN and Coalitions to share one activity they plan to collaborate on.

Finding the SPARK Beyond Trauma: Speaking to the Potential, Ability and Resilience Inside EVERY Kid
Regardless of their circumstances, there is a SPARK within every human being that cannot be damaged. This presentation will explore how innate resilience is uncovered through a simple understanding of the mind, and the stress resistance needed to overcome trauma is naturally formed. This session will be give you hands on activities from the SPARK Mentoring Programs to use with the youth you work with to help build up the protective factors needed to Find the SPARK beyond Trauma.

The methods in this presentation have gone through rigorous, research and evaluation using both randomized and control groups. In 6 separate studies, employing over 1000 participants (K-12th grade), the methods have been deemed evidence-based with participants showing significant improvement in levels of resilience (up to 91%), emotional regulation including impulse control (up to 83%), communication, decision making, and problem-solving skills (up to 89%). They have been published in 3 peer-reviewed journals and have also been evaluated and approved by CASEL (Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning).

Focus on Flourishing: How Promoting Positive Mental Health can Engage More Stakeholders, Boost Academic Performance, AND Reduce Student Distress
As rates of mental illnesses among college students continue rising, upstream prevention strategies are necessary. But viewing the problem through a lens focused on illness can reduce collaboration opportunities. The presenter will share research and programming based on the dual continua model of mental health to help engage students, faculty, staff, and administrators in the use of innovative strategies designed to boost flourishing and academic performance while simultaneously reducing mental illness symptomology.

The goals of this presentation are to expand the framework of mental health from a dichotomy of ill or well to one of a dual continua of complete mental health, to examine the current prevalence of mental illness and mental health in college student populations, and to provide a foundation to engage students, faculty, staff, and administrators on college campuses in innovative strategies to build and support the complete mental health of their student populations.

Impaired Driving: How the Changing Legal Status of Cannabis is Challenging this Already Often Ignored Problem
Impaired driving is the leading cause of alcohol-related deaths among college students. And yet, many campuses give little attention to the issue. By discussing the history of impaired driving prevention and the roots of a blind-spot in campus action, we can better understand challenges facing campus professionals. All areas of a typical set of prevention actions, from needs assessment to program development and management, are challenged by the nature of impaired driving; a behavior that often impacts the community in a much more visible way than the campus. Cannabis legalization in many states has exacerbated this issue. It challenges us to better understand THC impairments, which have only recently been researched. Further, combined use of cannabis and alcohol heighten the complexity of this issue and our need for better understanding. However, there are promising approaches that will be discussed to help campus and community professionals consider what may improve the situation.

Practical Considerations for Campuses Addressing Student Impaired Road Use and Safety
Impaired road use is a complex behavior. It sits at a nexus of all aspects of a socio-ecological model that places the individual within a system of influence. It includes the individual’s own knowledge, attitudes and beliefs embedded in both social, institutional and community level influences. As such, addressing the issue likely requires an understanding of how each element of influence impacts the specific behavior. This session will explore the research demonstrating the value of this expansive thinking. For instance, town/gown coalitions have used environmental approaches to address overconsumption and underage access, while also supporting high-visibility enforcement of traffic-safety violations. Similarly, approaches to raising awareness of the issue may be critical to addressing newly identified risks such as cannabis-impaired road use. So examples of novel communication approaches will be explored as well.
